Before coming to San Antonio he served as music director of the Academy of Music in Chilliwack, British Columbia for four years. Owen brings versatility and dynamicism to his position as choral director and worship leader and is supportive of diversity in worship styles.

The Barrett Family
John Barrett, Assistant Rector

John Barrett comes to Christ Episcopal Church having recently been Chaplain at the Good Shepherd Episcopal School in the Diocese of Dallas. It was in Dallas that he also served at St. Luke's Episcopal Church as a curate after graduating from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry. While at Trinity he wrote a thesis on "The Secularization of Christian Schools." His particular focus at Trinity was on Church History.

A great deal of John's career before seminary was in education at religiously affiliated schools, both at Texas Military Institute and the Episcopal School of Dallas. At both schools he taught English, coached, and was involved in student activities. At ESD he felt the clear call to serve the Lord as an ordained minister.

In addition to his Masters in Divinity at Trinity, he has two other Masters, one in English Literature and another in Education, Administration and Supervision, both from Fordham University in New York City.

John has some fairly old roots at Christ Episcopal Church. It was the church of his grandparents, Grady and Prudence Barrett and of his father Grady, Jr. As well, John attended Christ Episcopal 1986-1988 when at TMI. It was during those two years that the the Revs. Ted Schroder and John Claypool both separately asked John if he felt called to ordained ministry. He appreciates their planting this question in him, and he sees those years as important in his formation as a committed Christian.

John and Barbara have been married for ten years. They are the parents of William (8), Henry (5), and Johnny (2). They are all are excited about the call to Christ Episcopal and to serve in such a vibrant and faithful congregation. John says it will be a humbling honor to be partnering with Christ Episcopal in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
