“As the Deer” Martin Nystrom1

As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after thee.
You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship thee.

You alone are my strength, my shield;
to you alone may my spirit yield.
You alone are my heart’s desire,
and I long to worship thee.

You’re my friend and you are my brother, even though you are a king.
I love you more than any other, so much more than anything.

I want you more than gold or silver, only you can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye.

Processional Hymn

“Crown him with many crowns” Hymn 494: 1-3, 5

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own;
awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity.

Crown him the Son of God before the worlds began,
and ye, who tread where he hath trod, crown him the Son of man;
who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast,
and takes and bears them for his own, that all in him may rest.

Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save;
his glories now we sing who died, and rose on high,
who died, eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.

Crown him the Lord of heaven, enthroned in worlds above;
Crown him the King, to whom is given the wondrous name of Love.
Crown him with many crowns, as thrones before him fall,
crown him, ye kings, with many crowns, for he is King of all.

Alleluia. Christ is risen. BCP 355
The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect of the Day

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Let us pray.

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

A Prayer for Mothers Day

Blessed Jesus, we thank you for all the women who have been mothers to us – those who have given us life and the many who have added to our life, those who have carried us in their arms and those generous women who have carried us along in their hearts, those who have fed us our daily bread and those who have fed us with loads of kindness, those who walked us to school and those sage women who schooled us in kindness, those who have bound up our wounds and those brave women who have set us back on our feet.   Lord Jesus, your own mother, Mary, stood by you as a fledgling child, and she again stood there as you suffered terribly on the cross.  Mary’s life rises up as the witness of all women who have dared to be mothers to us and extend their stalwart, compassionate love that comes, O Lord, from you alone.  Amen.

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

Psalm 1

1 Happy are they who have not walked
in the counsel of the wicked, *
nor lingered in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *
and they meditate on his law day and night.

3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *
everything they do shall prosper.

4 It is not so with the wicked; *
they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright
when judgment comes, *
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

1 John 5:9-13

Gospel Hymn, all standing

“Alleluia! sing to Jesus!” Hymn 460: 1

Alleluia! sing to Jesus! his the scepter, his the throne;
Alleluia! his the triumph, his the victory alone;
Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood;
Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John 17:6-19

The Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, Lord Christ.

“Alleluia! sing to Jesus!” Hymn 460: 2

Alleluia! not as orphans are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! he is near us, faith believes, nor questions how:
though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty days were o’er,
shall our hearts forget his promise, “I am with you evermore”?

Sermon, Laura Hodge 9 a.m., Heather Yun 11 a.m.

Nicene Creed, all standing BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People, all standing

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon mothers of newborn and young children, give them energy, patience, gentleness, and happiness in these fleeting days of sticky hands, messy houses, and ever flowing laundry.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon those who are raising school aged children and teenagers, give them peace and joy in parenting during those moments that seem both hard and wonderful all at the same time.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon mothers who from afar watch and wonder about their adult children, give them perspective and wisdom as their children make choices and live their own lives.Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon those who had hoped to be mothers but have been unable to do so and those who persist in their dream to become mothers.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon those mothers who have adopted children and made a space in their homes and their hearts for those who may be terribly wounded.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon those mothers who grieve the loss of their own children, especially at this time the mothers of Ukraine, comfort and embrace them as they walk through the most torturous of heartbreaks.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, look gently upon all those who mourn the absence of their mother today, from death or illness or because of broken and challenging relationships.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Blessed Jesus Christ, help us to recognize all the women who have guided us and loved us like mothers, shining forth as an example of the depth of the love you offer each of your beloved children.
Most gracious Lord, Let it be with them according to you your Word (Luke 1:38).

Most holy Jesus Christ, you were carried in Mary’s womb and adored by her all the days of your earthly life.  You loved her so much that your last command was for the disciple John to care for her after your death (John 19:26).  Lord, in so doing, you have taught us that a mother’s love can lead us to the cross where we, too, can learn to love completely and sacrificially.  Help us never outgrow the miracle of our mother’s love.  AMEN.

*Thanks to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America for assisting in these prayers.

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence is kept, all kneeling.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins  through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice for God. Ephesians 5:2

Choral Anthem, all seated

“The Gift of Love” Hal Hopson, Based on 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire,
and have not love, my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.
Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess,
but not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.
Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole.
O come, Spirit, come, let inward love, let love guide every deed;
by this we worship, we are freed. Amen.

Presentation of gifts, all standing OLD 100TH

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving BCP 361

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

“Holy, holy, holy” S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues, all standing or kneeling...

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues...

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized Christians are welcome at the Communion table. At the time of the distribution of the sacrament, please come forward as the ushers direct, and kneel or stand at the altar rail. Hold out both hands to receive the Bread. If you choose to receive the Wine, help the Eucharistic Minister guide the chalice to your lips. If you wish to intinct or dip the Bread, hold it prominently, and the intinction cup will be offered to you. Know that receiving one or both elements is fully participating in Communion. If you are not receiving the sacrament, you are invited to come forward to the altar, cross your arms over your chest or put a hand over your heart, and the clergy will give you a blessing.

Communion Music

“What wondrous love is this” Hymn 439

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to lay aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,
to lay aside his crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing,
To God and to the Lamb, I will sing.
To God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,
while millions join the theme I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free I’ll sing and joyful be,
and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and through eternity I’ll sing on.

After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food  of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son,  and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn, all standing

“Jesus shall reign where’er the sun” Hymn 544: 1, 4-5

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun
doth his successive journeys run;
his kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
till moons shall wax and wane no more.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns:
the prisoners leap to lose their chains,
the weary find eternal rest,
and all who suffer want are blest.

Let every creature rise and bring
peculiar honors to our King;
angels descend with songs again,
and earth repeat the loud amen.

Alleluia, alleluia! Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia!
