LITURGY OF THE WORD

Hymn, all standing for the procession of the Cross

“The Church’s one foundation” Hymn 525

The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is his new creation by water and the word:
from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth,
her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed;
yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, “How long?”
and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war
she waits the consummation of peace for evermore;
till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed,
and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union with God, the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we
like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Opening Acclamation
BCP 355

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Children who are in Pre-K 4 through 3rd grade are invited to the front during the Song of Praise to meet the chapel leader holding the cross at this time. We will bless them and send them to Children’s Chapel. They will return after the sermon to join their families for Communion.

Song of Praise

“Gloria” Josh Benninger1

Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, Almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Blessing of the Children BCP 829

Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children: Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen

Collect of the Day BCP 230

The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lessons BCP 357

Old Testament:  Joel 2:23-32

O children of Zion, be glad
and rejoice in the Lord your God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the later rain, as before.
The threshing floors shall be full of grain,
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
I will repay you for the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent against you.
You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.

You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again
be put to shame.
Then afterward
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
Even on the male and female slaves,
in those days, I will pour out my spirit.
I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 112 Ton-y-Botel, arr. Josh Benninger

Happy are they who fear the Lord,
and take great delight in his law.
Their descendants will be mighty,
that generation will be blessed.
Their house will have much wealth and riches,
their righteousness endures forever.

Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, praise the Lord!

They light the way when darkness fills the air,
gracious, merciful, righteous are they.
It is well with those who are generous,
who justly conduct their affairs.
The righteous will never be moved,
they will be remembered forever and ever.

They’re not afraid of evil tidings,
they are secure and firm in the Lord.
Their hearts are steady, they’re not fearful,
they will triumph over their foes.
They give freely, they give to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.

The wicked see it, they’re filled with anger,
they gnash their teeth and melt away;
Their evil desire comes to nothing,
comes to nothing, nothing.
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Praise to the Lord who reigns forever.

The Epistle:
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

At my first defense no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. no good but only ruins those who are listening. Hymn,

“Blest are the pure in heart” Hymn 656: 1-2

Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God;
the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ’s abode.

The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring,
to dwell in lowliness with us, our pattern and our King.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St.Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Gospel: Luke 18:9-14

Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, `God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, `God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The Gospel of the Lord.  Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Hymn, all standing

“Blest are the pure in heart” Hymn 656: 3-4

He to the lowly soul will still himself impart
and for his dwelling and his throne will choose the pure in heart.

Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be;
give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple fit for thee.

Sermon,
all seated The Rev. Joe Dewey

After the sermon, brief silence is kept for meditation on God’s Holy Word.

The Nicene Creed, all standing BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People, Form IV, all kneeling or seated BCP 388

The leader will offer prayers. After each petition the leader will pray:

Leader: Lord in your mercy

People: Hear our prayer.

The Celebrant will add a concluding Collect.

The Officiant continues...

Confession of Sin BCP 360

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence is kept before offering the confession.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant alone stands and gives the Absolution.

The Peace,

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

“Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus” LASSET UNS MIT JESU ZIEHEN, Georg G. Boltze, 18th c., Arranged by Dan Forrest

Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow his example pure,
through a world that would deceive us, where to sin our hearts our lured.
Ever in his footsteps treading, living here, yet home above,
full of faith and hope and love, let us do our Father’s bidding,
faithful Lord, abide with me; Savior lead, I follow Thee.

Let us also die with Jesus, by his cross he conquered death,
freed us from our souls’ destruction, quickened us with life’s new breath.
Let us mortify, while living, self and pride, and die to sin,
and the grave that shuts us in shall but prove the gate to heaven.
Jesus, here I die to Thee, there to dwell eternally.

Let us gladly live with Jesus, he is risen from the dead.
Death is swallowed up in victory, Jesus, Thou art now our Head.
Living members of Thy Body, where Thou livest we shall be,
keep us constantly, even so, dear Lord, come quickly,
Jesus, here I live to Thee, there to dwell eternally.
Let us ever walk with Jesus.

Doxology, all standing Old 100th

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host:
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

The Great Thanksgiving,
all standing BCP 361

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The communion prayer continues with the Preface which concludes:

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus & Benedictus

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord” Hymnal S 128, William Mathias

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer, all seated or kneeling...

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer which concludes:

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread and a period of silence is kept.

“Christ Our Passover” Hymn S–154

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

All baptized Christians who are permitted to receive Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to do so on this occasion. To receive consecrated bread, place one hand over the other with palms facing upward. To receive the consecrated wine, help the Eucharistic Minister guide the chalice to your lips. If you are not receiving the sacrament, come forward to the altar, cross your arms over your chest and the clergy will give you a blessing.

Hymn, all sitting and joining the choir in singing

“How Great Thou Art!” LEVAS II 60

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
thy power throughout the universe displayed!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee;
how great thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee;
how great thou art, how great thou art!

When thru the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in—
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Post Communion Prayer,
all kneeling, the Celebrant says

Let us pray. BCP 366

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food  of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son,  and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn, all standing

“Christ is made the sure foundation” Hymn 518: 1, 3-4

Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone,
chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the Church in one;
holy Zion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone.

To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray,
and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway.

Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain;
what they gain from thee, for ever with the blessed to retain,
and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign.

Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia!
